First off all i would like to appereciate your desire to study more hours.You are taking a road less traveled and im sure it will lead you to sucess if you keep going.
I will try to put forth (myopinion,misconception,suggestions,usefulness etc.) in some points (not in any specific order):)
1. If you want to clear some competitive examination and if somebody has told you that 10 hrs/day is **the threshold for clearing this examination ,then simply it’s not true**.
2. Different people can achieve **same defeat/success by putting different number of hours per day.**We all are different after all.
3. **Mechanically studying **for 10 or more hours (while looking at watch again and again) **will not be fruitful**. It’s not ritualistic thing where you will get desired results irrespective or your devotion towards the process (if atall that happens). That means merely completing 10 hours in-front of open book does not count.
4. One should study till the time he/she is **able to concentrate** and there is no 15-min or 45-min formula. It differs a lot from person to person. One way of determining it is like while studying if you have to read a line again for understanding it and if it happens 2–3 times then its a **good indication that your brain is asking for a break**.
5. **Rather than maximizing number of study-hours try to maximize the output.** For example if a person do 12-hours study and 5-hours sleep then in some cases if he goes for 11-hours of study and 6-hours of sleep then his output may get better. So its not advisable to study when your body needs desperate sleep. Now the questions comes how much sleep is sufficient then my interaction with different medical professionals tells me that on an average a human requires 6–7 hours of sleep per day for optimal functioning of the brain(i am talking about the age group of 14–20 years) . Ofcourse there are exception,there are people who can work very efficiently even after sleeping for 2–3 hours and there are some people who need more sleep than 7-hours if they are suffering from some medical condition.
6. **Interest and motivation plays a very important role.** Like many people can play games on computer for straight 12–13 hours even if they are suffering from physical problems (like heavy eyes and fever) this is called Interest. Some students(who might have been hurt by someones comment or insult) can study like crazy just to prove a point it’s called motivation .
7. When some people say that **study smart and number of hours does not count or matter, then this is not true entirely either**. If someone is not God-gifted then to perform at par with a God-gifted person he/she has to put lot many more hours than that God-gifted person.
8. A student has a lot of potential and the amount of hard work also depends upon **his perception about his own standing among others. **For example if he is around midway of the class (In performance) then probably he will be happy to study 4 hours /day as then he will be comparing himself with the students around him. But the same student if starts competing with top 10 students of the class then probably studying for 10-hours a day will be the new normal for him as the students with whom he is comparing himself, will be studying this much(well most of them) and he will not see it as extraordinary thing to study 10-hours a days. So peer comparison/validation is also very important. A person can surely increase his ability to study more number of hours. Similarly if a student sleeps for 8 hours daily and thinks that this much he surely requires for fresh brain then if he starts sleeping for 6 hours only,then after 3–4 days he will find that it is also ok and his brain is still functioning at the same efficiency as it was,when he was sleeping for 8 hours.
9. Lets look at the **equation
24 hours = A + B + C** ,
where A = Number of hours require for daily chores and sleep etc. ;
B = Hours devoted to study;
C= Hours wasted on some addiction (Like games, online surfing,day dreaming, procrastination etc.)
Now to increase B one need to decrease C and for which strong will-power is required(assuming there is no scope in ‘A’).
Now will power is something one need to work upon himself and no fency solutions or motivator can help.
10. To increase your efforts/input **try to keep daily realistic targets** like “Today i will try to solve exercise-1 of my study material completely” **rather than setting targets in terms of number of hours**. You must have felt that when you were immersed in some interesting thing then you loose track of time.
Thanks for reading.
Cheers.
